HILLSBOROUGH — A dispute over cigarettes apparently led a Hillsborough teenager to take the life of an 18-year-old friend, police say.
Hillsborough police charged 16-year-old Robert Earl Sorrell on Thursday in connection with the death of Herbert Calvin Keeter III, 18, of 317 West Hill Ave.
Keeter's body was found at 4 a.m. Thursday in a wooded picnic area behind a McDonald's restaurant. Police and rescue personnel were notified and arrived to find the body lying face down on the ground.
Police say Keeter had been stabbed several times in the neck and still had his wallet and valuables. For that reason, they ruled out robbery as a motive early in their investigation.
Police made their arrest at about 6 p.m. Thursday, after questioning the Sorrell for most of the day. They say the two argued over a pack of cigarettes. Authorities also say that alcohol fueled the dispute.
A Durham teen was fatally shot outside the same McDonald's restaurant in April 1995.
