— A reported standoff in Chapel Hill came to an end just hours after it started when police discovered that there was no hostage situation inside the house when they arrived..

The incident occurred in the Laurel Ridge apartment complex after someone called 9-1-1, then hung up. The 9-1-1 operator returned the call and reported that the woman who answered the telephone sounded distressed.

Police arrive at the scene and found a woman and child outside.

James Burnette, 28, was inside with a shotgun and rifle, but police say he never held the woman and boy at gunpoint, nor was there ever a hostage situation, as was reported earlier.

Burnette will not be charged.
