Shuttle Re-Entry May Have Set Off Sonic Boom

ASHEVILLE — Some folks in western NorthCarolina heard acouple of loud explosions this morning. They can blame it on theSpace Shuttle ``Atlantis.''

NASA spokesman Bruce Buckingham says the shuttle's approach fora landing at the Kennedy Space Center carried it over western NorthCarolina and upstate South Carolina. Buckingham says the ``booms''that people heard were likely caused by the spacecraft.

People didn't know that at eight a-m. Nervous residents fromFairview to Riceville in Buncombe County, the city of Asheville andother locations flooded 9-1-1 emergency phone centers to reportwhat they heard.Copyright ©1996 AssociatedPress.
