Shuttle Re-Entry May Have Set Off Sonic Boom

Asheville — Some folks in western North Carolina heard a couple of loud explosions this morning. They can blame it on the Space Shuttle ``Atlantis.''
NASA spokesman Bruce Buckingham says the shuttle's approach for a landing at the Kennedy Space Center carried it over western North Carolina and upstate South Carolina. Buckingham says the ``booms'' that people heard were likely caused by the spacecraft.
People didn't know that at eight a-m. Nervous residents from Fairview to Riceville in Buncombe County, the city of Asheville and other locations flooded 9-1-1 emergency phone centers to report what they heard.
