Midway Deal Off, But New Deal Possible

MORRISVILLE — The buyout of Triangle-based Midway Airlines by People Express co-founder Donald Burr is off, but Midway has a new suitor in the wings.
The trade magazine "Commercial Aviation Report" says Midway may now be the target of Ed Wegel, who would have been chief financial officer had the Burr deal gone through.
Burr backed away from that deal after American Airlines and its pilot union agreed to a new contract which calls for an end to Midway's participation in the frequent-flyer program Advantage Miles.
It is believed Burr was worried that would cut into Midway's passenger count.
