RALEIGH — Triangle native John Cerqueira got a hero's welcome Saturday. In the mayhem that followed the World Trade Center attack, Cerquira helped a disable woman down 68 flights of stairs to safety.
Before the North Carolina-North Carolina State game, Cerqueira was awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine by Gov. Mike Easley. He also received an American flag for his act of bravery.
"You have to realize that our values are taught to us throughout our life. And John Cerqueira learned his here at N.C. State. He showed his courage. He showed his bravery and he made all of us proud," said Easley.
