HOPE MILLS, N.C. — A 14-year-old South View High School student was transferred to a pediatric unit Monday night after being struck by lightning Monday afternoon.

The student was waiting for her ride home in front of the school when the storm struck.

According to authorities, a female student was running through pine trees at South View High School around 4:30 p.m. when she was hit by lightning.

"Apparently one of the lightning bolts hit one of the pine trees and the lightning bolt transfered from the pine trees to her body," said Chief Lee Sudia of the Hope Mills Fire Department.

The student was initially listed in critical condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where she was taken, conscious and breathing, immediately following the incident.
