Raleigh Police Chief Officially Sworn In

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Raleigh's new police chief was officially sworn in Monday.

Jane Perlov is the city's first female police chief. She says she is eager to start on the new job; however, as a veteran of the New York police department, she takes over with a heavy heart.

She also says she will take a close look at the safety of buildings in her new jurisdiction.

"I think it has changed everyone's agenda, no matter what it is you do or where you live," she says. "One thing it has certainly has made me do quickly is to assess the security of the city's buildings and city workers and take a look at our physical structures and see where we are at security-wise."

Her parents, who live close to the World Trade Center, came for her ceremony. Before coming to Raleigh, Perlov was the secretary of public safety for Massachusetts.

Perlov says she plans to walk the beat in every neighborhood, so she can get a good grasp on what people want out of the police force.
