GARNER, N.C. — Authorities said a driver was going at a high rate of speed down Ten Ten Road in Garner before crashing Saturday afternoon.

According to authorities, 21-year-old Esteban Benitez may have approached speeds of 80 mph when he lost control and slammed into a power pole near Highway 50. The trooper on the scene found open containers in the car, and believes that alcohol may have played a role in the crash.

Benitez was rushed to WakeMed with life-threatening injuries. He has been charged with careless and reckless driving and DWI. No one else was in the car.

One lane of Ten Ten Road between Crowder Road and Highway 50 was closed Saturday afternoon after the wreck. It was expected to reopen early Saturday evening.
