JOHNSTON COUNTY — Johnston County investigators want to know how a handcuffed suspect sped away in a patrol car.
The suspect led deputies on a 40-minute chase that forced Sheriff Steve Bizzell off the road, according to the Johnston County Sheriff's Department.
The suspect crashed the patrol car into a tree, ending Thursday's chase, according to the department.
Richard Kirk Maynor had originially been stopped for driving a truck with a broken headlight. He now faces a long list of charges, including assault with a deadly weapon.
