Rocky Mount Fire Leads To Reforms

Posted Updated

ROCKY MOUNT — A fire that claimed seven lives last year in Rocky Mount has inspired some changes to the city's housing code.

The City Council has approved stricter standards aimed at rental housing. The biggest change is a massive fine for landlords who do not provide working smoke detectors.

If they do not install one within 72 hours of being notified, they will pay $250 a day until a detector is in place.
