Possible Culprit Admits To I-85 Nail Incident On Radio Show

DURHAM, N.C. — Nearly 100 drivers got flat tires on their vehicles after a truck spilled nails near the Interstate 85/40 split Thursday morning.

Drivers were forced to change their tires in pouring rain after the incident, in which industrial nails fell off the back of a truck on northbound I-85 from the Alamance County-Orange County line to exit 160 toward Durham.

The spill happened near Mebane around 6 a.m. and also affected three North Carolina Highway Patrol cars and a sheriff's cruiser.

About that same time, a man called into the 92 Rock morning show in the Triad, claiming to be the truck driver responsible for the mess.

The man said his name was Brandon. He said he lost a pallet with 20 boxes of nails at Exit 148 on I-40 and I-85 near Graham while driving a load to a Raleigh Home Depot.

The radio show isn't sure if the call was real or just a prank, but the Highway Patrol is investigating it for leads. Authorities said if they find the driver, the trucking company could be held responsible for paying for the tire damage.
