Grand Jury Indicts Man in Trooper's Death

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — A grand jury has indicted a man on a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the death of a state Highway Patrol trooper killed during a chase in January.

In addition to manslaughter, Travis Freeman is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official, assault with intent to kill and felony speeding to elude arrest.

The grand jury issued the indictment this week.

Trooper John Duncan died January ninth after losing control of his patrol car during a chase in Cumberland County.

Duncan was helping another trooper during a traffic stop when the driver jumped back into his car and sped away. Duncan's car overturned, caught fire and exploded during the chase. He died at the scene.

Freeman was captured two days later.
