Cumberland Teen To Be Retried For Murder Of Classmate

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — A Cumberland County teen accused of masterminding the murder of her classmate will go back to court.

Shanon Tyson is accused of ordering the murder of Chris Eggleston in June 1997.

Her first trial ended two years ago this week with the jury deadlocked 11 to 1.

District Attorney Ed Grannis says he hoped for a new trial this fall, but says it will not happen until early next year.

Another student charged, Matthew Myers, is serving 25 to 31 years after pleading guilty to second degree murder and kidnapping.

Eggleston was found bound and strangled behind Westover High School back in June 1997.

Investigators believe Eggleston was killed after he fell out of favor with a group called "The Kindred."
