GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A man accused of hitting two middle school students with his sport utility vehicle in November is now out of jail.

Wilder Mejia pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon after seriously injuring Carson Thomas and Mackenzie Wessels, both 13. He spent 150 days in jail and is now under electronic house arrest.

Police said the students were hit as they walked across a road next to Greenwood Middle School in Goldsboro on Nov. 18. Investigators said the two were crossing with the "walk" signal from the crosswalk sign.

Initially, Mejia was identified as Luis Delgado Jesus, but authorities later realized his true identity.

Investigators say Mejia is in the country illegally, and federal immigration authorities say they will eventually deport him.
