Lucent Technologies To Lay Off As Many As 20,000 Workers

Posted Updated

CARY — Lucent Technologies says it will have to lay off up to 20,000 employees to help its bottom line.

The telecommunications giant admits some reductions could come in the Triangle. Lucent has offices at N.C. State's Centennial Campus and in Cary. About half the space at the Centennial Campus facility remains unused.

"The information we are getting right now is they are open to really any kind of offer, and I think probably what will happen is that they will look at their plans based on what will happen in the marketplace," says Ken Atkins of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce.

Since January, Lucent has eliminated 19,000 jobs company-wide.
