Take A Drive Down East To Unearth Dinosaur Fossils

Posted Updated

BEAUFORT — "Jurassic Park 3" is out in theaters, but you can also find dinosaur fossils, just a short drive from the Triangle.

The

Aurora Fossil Museum

allows visitors to find fossils or shark teeth. Large piles of dirt are taken from a mining company down the street. Their machines take out phosphate, then dump the untold treasures in front of the museum.

Attendance always seems to jump when a big film with big dinosaurs comes out.

"People get curious, then they tend to get on the Internet or go to the library and through there, they find us," says curator Pat Young.

You can get from Raleigh to Aurora in less than three hours. The town is just south of the Pamlico River in Beaufort County. The museum and the digging are free, plus you can keep what you find.
