Triangle Towns Win Right To Take Water From Jordan Lake

Posted Updated

WAKE COUNTY — The water tap has been opened a little more to the Triangle.

Cary, Apex, Morrisville and RTP have been awarded 9 million more gallons a day from Jordan Lake, but there are some conditions. By 2010, the towns will have to return some of the water to the Cape Fear Basin, which feeds Fayetteville's water supply.

Cumberland County leaders have been against giving out more water, but they have come to a compromise.

"I think that our concerns were addressed in such a way as to allow certain areas of the Triangle to grow without doing any significant long-term damage to those of us down the river," says Sen. Tony Rand, D-Cumberland.

More water will be available in about a month. There should be no change in water bills.
