Developer To Build Open-Air Shopping Center In Garner

Posted Updated

GARNER — A Charlotte developer will build a large shopping center in Garner near the Interstate 40, U.S. Highway 70 intersection.

White Oak Crossing will be a 500,000 square foot, open-air center, which is a little smaller than Crossroads in Cary. Anchor stores have not been announced, but more than 30 stores are planned, bringing 1,200 new jobs to Garner.

The first phase will be complete in Spring 2003 and more may follow.

"We are contemplating multi-family [housing], possibly some single family [housing] on the rear portion. It's a very large tract of land. We're also thinking about some office users, possibly some hotel users in the mix," said developer Rich Barta.

"It'll be a hub for a lot of people to come from as far away as Smithfield, Selma and down to Sampson County, Fayetteville and other communities to the east and south of us," said Garner mayor Don Rohrbaugh.

Preliminary work is also underway on Auburn Park, a mixed-use development across I-40 from the White Oak Crossing land.
