Young Bear Killed; Durham Police Searching For Others

Posted Updated

DURHAM — Durham police spent the morning searching for two bears they believe may be roaming around the city.

Around 1 p.m. Friday, an active searched was halted, but police have increased their presence in the Guess Road areaafter two black bears were spotted on the 3500 block of the road Friday morning.

Residents have reported bear sightings in the area since Wednesday.

Thursday night, police spotted and killed a bear after they say it wandered into a resident's yard off Guess Road, in the northwest part of the city.

Police called Durham Animal Control to come and tranquilize the bear, but before the officer arrived, police felt it was necessary to shoot the bear.

WRAL has contacted the N.C. Museum of Life and Sciences in Durham, who say all of their bears are accounted for.
