STEM — A swarm of bees in Granville County killed a dog and sent a woman to the hospital.
Kim Hoffman was walking her dog, Quincy, a full-grown black labrador, when both of them were attacked by the bees. She says that she has never seen bees act so aggressively.
"Quincy could have easily been someone's five-year-old grandchild. I'm a full-grown adult, and I was only stung 20 times. It put me in the hospital," she says. "I don't even want to think about what this could have done to a little child."
A neighbor took some of the bees that had died to N.C. State where entomologists there say they are ordinary honey bees. They also say it is not usual for them to swarm this time of year or to be so aggressive.
They suspect it is an isolated case and say there is no reason for the public to be alarmed.
