Durham Officer Was Involved In Another Shooting Last Year

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — A Durham police officer who shot and killed a suspect last week was involved in a similar situation last year, according to official records.

Officer R. L. Tinnin shot Javan Johnson after, investigators said, Johnson tried to run the officer over.

In January 2005, Tinnin shot a suspect during the search for a carjacking suspect. That man was not seriously hurt.

Tinnin, who has been with the Durham Police Department for seven years, is on administrative leave while the current case is being investigated.
