SOUTHERN PINES — If there is one person commanding attention at the2001 U.S. Women's Open, it is a young girl with a powerful swing.
Morgan Pressel, of Boca Raton, Florida, is playing in the tournament at the Pine Needles Lodge and Gold Club in Southern Pines. Pressel, who celebrated her 13th birthday last week, is one of 150 women to qualify for the tournament.
"My grandfather got me started," says the young golfer. "He took me out one day and said 'Why don't you try this.'"
Pressel, who comes from a family of tennis players, realized she had a natural swing and stuck with the sport.
The teen says she is having a great time at the Open because there is no pressure.
"I like it because it's a lot of fun, I get to meet new people and travel to cool places," says Pressel.
Pressel qualified as a 12-year old. She is the youngest person to do so since 1967, when Beverly Klass qualified at the age of 10.`
