Good Samaritan Nurses His Own Wounds After Rescuing Motorist From Burning Van

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — On Friday, a man's life was saved because several good samaritans happened to be in the right place at the right time.

John Gerstenfeld was among several people who stopped to help rescue Anthony McCrae, who wastrapped in his burning vanafter crashing into a tree.

"You could hear guys just pulling. When it gave way, I fell backwards and two seconds later, he popped out the window," says Gerstenfeld.

A family spokesman says McCrae has had several emergency surgeries, but his prognosis is good. He remains in critical condition at UNC Hospitals.

Gerstenfeld, who suffered second-degree burns as a result of the accident, says he almost never travels on the section of Interstate 40 where the accident occurred.
