Police Investigating Alleged Sexual Assault Against Fayetteville Student

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — Police are looking for a man they say sexually assaulted a teenage girl on her way to her Fayetteville high school Monday morning.

The victim, an 18-year-old student at Terry Sanford High School, told police she accepted a ride from a man in a gray van as she was walking to school. Police say the man took the girl to a wooded area and assaulted her.

"She was offered a ride and accepted the ride and at some point she grew concerned and wanted to be let out of the car," says Lt. Katherine Bryant of the Fayetteville Police Department. "The suspect did not let her out of the car. He drove to a wooded area and she was criminally assaulted in the wooded area and released at that time."

Police sent out a recorded phone message to alert residents living within a one-mile area of the alleged assault.

The principal at Terry Sanford High School tells WRAL that the school has not yet formally discussed the incident with students.
