— Wyatt Yelverton, the captain of the baseball team, is an honor student at the top of the senior class at Beddingfield High School.

Yelverton has lettered in soccer and football. He also pitches and plays centerfield for the baseball team.

"As a ballplayer, he is hard-nosed and gritty. He has a tremendous work effort that separates him from other players," says baseball coach Jodie O'Neal.

Glen Griffin, Yelverton's teacher, says Wyatt gets along with everybody.

"Wyatt is one of those rare students who goes beyond what is enough, He handles any type of situation well," says teacher Glen Griffin. "He fits in well with his classmates. He is well-liked by everybody and all of his teachers respect him."

Yelverton says he always does his best at everything he does.

"I make time for everything. I've had a mindset that I was going to handle all of this, and I think that I have done a good job," he says.

Wyatt Yelverton is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award.

Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
