ALLTEL Customers Face Cell Phone Outages

CARY — ALLTELis experiencing an outage that is shutting down cell phones in the Triangle and across eastern North Carolina.
The outages started around 1 p.m. Monday. Customers trying to use their cell phones received a No Signal symbol or dead air on their phones. Officials say the problem involved a switching station in Garner.
"Sometimes, you have problems with the switcher, and it impacts a few customers, but this is the first marketwide problem like this that we've had," says ALLTEL vice president and general manager Jerry Weaver.
ALLTEL engineers worked on the problem at the switching station in Garner. The telephone service has now been restored.
