BUNN, N.C. — At Bunn High School, the Wildcats have a true star in Christina Gurley.
Gurley is the ace of the pitching staff, allowing less than an earned run a game. Softball coach Mike Lovin says Gurley is a big part in the team's success.
"The kids know we need her in the lineup, day in and day out," he says. "She is a good hitter. She is fundamentally sound from top to bottom. Her biggest asset is she is a hard-throwing pitcher."
"It is great to be in that role because people look up to you, and you can help others just like the way others have helped you along the way," Gurley says.
Gurley plays saxophone in the high school band and performs well in the classroom. Colleen Griffin, Gurley's teacher, says Christina is well-deserving of this special award.
"She always gives you 100 percent effort," she says.
Christina Gurley is this week's winner of the Extra Effort Award.
Tom Suiter's Extra Effort award airs Wednesdays during WRAL's 6:00 News.
