RALEIGH — A former Wake County Schools superintendent is dead after an illness.

Robert Wentz led the school system from 1989 through 1994. He died Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas, Nev., where he had retired.

In recent years he suffered from Alzheimer's disease.

Wentz spent 32 years in education, the last quarter-century as a superintendent in several districts across the country.
