DUNN — A crossing-gate arm may be to blame for a fatal accident involving a tractor-trailer and a freight train in Dunn.

A mile-long CSX freight train slammed into the tractor-trailer Saturday afternoon on Highway 421 in downtown Dunn, killing the truck driver and injuring his wife.

Tony Gainey, 28, of Currie, was killed as he tried to free the truck. Christina Gainey was in the cab at the time. She is in stable condition at Betsy Johnson Memorial Hospital.

"It appears that one of the arms came down between the tractor and the trailer," says Lt. L. Parker of the Dunn Police Department. "The arm broke loose the cable to the trailer, causing the trailer to lock up."

Witnesses say Gainey got out of the truck, but the train slammed into the cab, hitting him as he tried to escape.

Investigators say there is no sign that Gainey tried to speed across the tracks to beat the train. and Michelle Singer
