Tractor-Trailer Overturns, Creates Traffic Problems On I-40

A tractor-trailer overturned Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 40 in southeast Wake County, causing traffic headaches for motorists.(WRAL-TV5 News)
WAKE COUNTY — A tractor-trailer overturned Tuesday afternoon in southeast Wake County. closing a portion of Interstate 40.

The incident happened at 12:15 p.m. near the Johnston County border on I-40 when the right front tire blew out. The driver went off the road and the tractor-trailer overturned.

The truck was carrying sodium hydrosulfide. The chemical is used to process pulp for papermaking. The driver was not injured.

Hazmat crews and emergency personnel arrived on the scene. Officials were able to right the vehicle and unload the chemical. They also say the chemical did not leak out of the vehicle.

Officials have reopened both westbound lanes of Interstate 40. The eastbound lanes are also open.
