Durham Businesses Worry Abandoned Hotel Will Attract Crime

Posted Updated

DURHAM — A decaying Bull City landmark may get new life.

The Heart of Durham Hotel has deteriorated since it shut down six years ago. The boarded-up building sits on a piece of real estate just at the entrance of the downtown loop.

Nearby businesses worry that the abandoned hotel will attract crime and, in turn, hurt their image.

"It's been there for years in the state it's in," says Edward Bowser of N.C. Mutual. "I just really wish they'd clean it up. It really takes away from our building."

A group, that includes Raleigh developer John Adams, recently purchased the option to buy the property. The deadline on the option is after the first of the year.

There is no word on what the group plans to do with the hotel.
