UNC Officially Welcomes New Chancellor

CHAPEL HILL — The new chancellor of theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hillwas formally installed Thursday.

James Moeser was sworn in as the university's ninth chancellor.

Before coming to UNC, Moeser served as chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

Moeser succeeds Chancellor Michael Hooker, who died of cancer last year.

Thursday also marks this year'sUniversity Day, an annual event that celebrates the birth of the nation's oldest university system.

The celebration began in 1877 as a way to commemorate the 1793 of the placing of the Old East cornerstone. Classes were canceled so students could attend the ceremony.
