FAYETTEVILLE — A fuel spill on Highway 53 forced some Fayetteville drivers to find a new way home Monday night.

A white pickup truck collided with a gasoline tanker around 3 p.m. at Cedar Creek Road near the I-95 exchange, spilling more than 500 gallons of gasoline along the highway.

Police, fire personnel and rescue crews had to wear protective clothing as they surveyed the scene. Safety crews sprayed white foam to soak up the remaining gasoline.

The road was closed for more than six hours, forcing drivers to find alternate routes of travel. The driver of the pickup truck suffered minor injuries.
