Leaders Talk About Race at Raleigh Conference

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — State and community leaders met Thursday in Raleigh to address the racial divide.

The North Carolina Initiative Race Conference is designed to identify problems and find solutions. Most of the focus is on education and the performance gap between white and black students.

"Is it a racial issue? Sure it's a racial issue," says NCCU chancellor Julius Chambers. "It's every kind of issue you want to call it. None of us can be satisfied with our children not getting through school and not coming out with a competitive education."

Thursday's meeting is a follow-up to Governor Hunt's 1997 Conference on Racial Reconciliation.
