Man Hit By Stray Bullet Near Durham School

Durham police say Nathaniel Barnes was hit by a stray bullet near W.G. Pearson Elementary School Monday afternoon.(WRAL-TV5 News)
DURHAM — A stray bullet hit a man as he was driving down a Durham street, leaving him in critical condition Monday afternoon.

Durham policesay Nathaniel Barnes, 56, of 2403 Fayetteville Road, was shot in the head by a stray bullet while driving his blue Jeep Cherokee.

Police believe the bullet came from a fight going on nearby at the corner of Umstead and Marrick Streets.

Barnes was taken to Duke University Medical Center, where his condition remains critical.

The shooting happened near W.G. Pearson Elementary School. Officers insist students were never in danger.

Detectives say they have several leads in the case, but no charges have been filed. From staff and wire reportsandMichelle Singer
