State Investigators Meet To Compare Notes In Rash of Check Cashing Robberies

Posted Updated

SMITHFIELD — Investigators from a dozen agencies in the state want to know if several recent robberies are related.

Check-cashing stores have been hit in Smithfield, Apex, Durham, Wilson, Dunn, Sanford and Lumberton. Police in those cities and towns are getting together to compare notes. Some of the victims were held up at gunpoint in broad daylight.

"They try to do the customer service deal where they say, 'Can I help you?'" and he says, 'Yeah, give me all your money,'" says Sgt. Steve Knox of the Smithfield Police Department. "Then he takes a handgun of some form out."

Several officers from North and South Carolina met in Smithfield Wednesday. They are putting together a timeline and database that could help them solve the robberies.
