Fort Bragg Celebrates Change of Command

Posted Updated

FORT BRAGG — The Commander of Fort Bragg's 82nd Airborne Division is leaving, but he is not going far.

Maj. Gen. Dan McNeill turned over command to Brig. Gen. David Petraues in a change of command ceremony Thursday. McNeill will become commander of the 18th Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg.

Petraues, who was the assistant division commander for operations, will serve as the 82nd's interim commander until Maj. Gen. John Vines arrives in September from Egypt.

"The privilege of temporarily holding the colors is a wonderful privilege, but there's always other leaders to take those colors and lead our units so it's a great strength of our Army," says Petraues.

Maj. Gen. McNeill has been part of the 82nd Airborne for more than 15 years. After Wednesday's ceremony, he was promoted to lieutenant general in preparation for his new job.
