RALEIGH — Traffic was at a standstill in north Raleigh early Thursday as hundreds of cyclists embarked on a 330-mile ride to the nation's capital.

The cyclists received a police escort from the Raleigh Entertainment and Sports Arena on Blue Ridge Road to Strickland and Falls of Neuse Roads.

The fifth annual Tanqueray AIDSRidesUSA will raise money for two organizations that help people who have AIDS.

Participants will arrive in Washington D.C. on Sunday.

The ride is expected to raise about $4.5 million for the charities involved. In order to do that, each rider had to raise a minimum of $2,000.
