Falls of Neuse Widening Begins This Weekend

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Raleigh is speeding up efforts to widen connector roads around the Outer Loop. Even on the fast track, though, many businesses will suffer while road crews work.

A massive mess begins this weekend as crews link Falls of Neuse to I-540, the Outer Loop.

Road construction, closures and congestion are enough to tee off anyone, including the owner of Falls Golf Complex.

"It's good that it's going to be here eventually," says business owner Roger Cawiezell. "It's bad that it's going to be all messed up for probably another year, year and a half."

Cawiezell will lose most of his parking lot and a good dose of business while crews widen Falls of Neuse and connect it to I-540.

Despite the growing pains, he supports the Outer Loop and the boost in business it will bring. He just hopes construction does not last too long.

The DOT says the Outer Loop will connect with Falls of Neuse by December. Raleigh plans to widen Falls of Neuse from Strickland Road to Raven Ridge Road by December 2001.
