Student Uses Emergency Phone to Foil Muggers

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — Emergency call boxes are beginning to show up on college campuses all over the Triangle. A Raleigh man says he was glad to see the one he used.

The boxes are intended to promote security and keep students out of harm's way. North Carolina State student Jason Kelling says that phone might well have saved his life when he was attacked by a group of young men.

NC State is currently in the process of installing new call boxes all over campus. A caller merely has to push a button, and security responds, even if the caller can't talk. The phones are topped with bright blue lights which could attract the attention of a nearby officer.
