SBI Says Major Drug Operation Thwarted

Posted Updated

FAYETTEVILLE — A North Carolina drub-smuggling operation has been swamped, according to the State Bureau of Investigation.

Marion Person, a former Fayetteville clerk of court, is charged with being one of the ringleaders of the illegal operation.

Person allegedly helped provide false birth certificates which enabled drug clients to obtain fake North Carolina drivers' licenses.

Agents say that, in turn, helped the smugglers bring over 50,000 pounds of marijuana and 500 pounds of cocaine into the state between 1988 and 1994.

Person faces life in prison and a $4 million dollar fine if convicted
