The blaze began about 7 Saturday night as 50 people were attending a Sunday school class in a nearby building and having a cookout.
Approximately 100 firefighters from 10 departments worked to save the 106-year-old building. It took 90 minutes to control the fire.
The church, whose members are predominantly white, has about 400 congregants.
Sunday's services were held in the church's fellowship hall
