Car Stereo Theft on the Rise in North Raleigh

Posted Updated

RALEIGH — July 24, 1996 - 11:30 a.m. EDT

Police say car break-ins have increased at some North Raleigh apartment complexes and the thieves are very specific about what they want: car stereos.

Some victims say other expensive personal items have been left untouched inside their vehicles, but the expensive car stereos are always gone. Police think the thieves could be trading the equipment for drugs, and they think the same group of people are involved in all the break-ins.

The method used to get into the vehicles is usually the same. Someone uses a tool to smash a window. Police say the thieves have dropped tools next to the cars they broke into and left them there.

Four vehicles were broken into in the same apartment complex Monday night.
