An alumni group at the Virginia Military Institute wants the school to give up its state-supported status and become a privately funded school.
The announcement was made in response to a U.S. Supreme Court ruling last week that VMI must admit women or give up state funding. It is estimated that changes to bring about privatization of VMI could cost up to $100 million
Making the school private would also have to be approved by Virginia's governor and state legislature
