Adopt-A-Thon '96 is a  special campaign promoting pet adoptions nationwide, and the Orange  County Animal Shelter stayed open for 36 hours to save as many animals'  lives as possible.

Shelter employee Marc Driskil says there were plenty of lucky orphans  this weekend.

Driskil says they usually find homes for about 10  animals per weekend, but that there were 36 homeless animals adopted  Saturday and at least 14 more by midday Sunday.

Mykia Daniel, an eighth grader at Ligon Middle School, was shot and killed on Monday in a north Raleigh apartment. A 16-year-old was charged with her murder.
