RALEIGH — May 2, 1996 - 7 p.m. EDT

In a WRAL Special Report that aired Monday and Tuesday, 5 On Your Side ReporterMonica Laliberteinvestigated a problem with moisture damage in homes covered with synthetic stucco. Thursday, the City of Raleigh placed a ban on the use of that substance as an exterior for homes in this area.

The substance, formally known as Exterior Insulation and Finish Systems or EIFS, has been shown to cause water damage in even relatively new homes.

The problem is not peculiar to the Triangle. There are many homes in various stages of repair and removal in Wilmington, and EIFS has created problems in at least 34 other states.

Anyone interested in obtaining an information packet on stucco can contact the attorney general's office at (919) 733-7741
