DURHAM — April 25, 1996 - 10:30 a.m. EDT

A fire at the School of Science and Math in Durham forced the evacuation of more than 200 students Wednesday night.

It started in a room on the second floor of Reynolds dormitory, then spread into the hallway. No students were injured, but a security guard suffered smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

Durham Fire Captain Chris McDonald says they are not sure how the fire started, but that it appears to have been accidental. He said the building sustained heavy smoke and heat damage, but only the one room was destroyed.

Credit for that, they say, goes to students who closed doors as they vacated the building, preventing the fire from spreading to other rooms.

Some students spent the night in the gym while others went home with their parents
