Raleigh police say three ponies were shot Tuesday at the N.C. State College of Veterinary Medicine; two of the ponies -- Cloud and Montana -- died.
Police said the ponies, who greeted strangers at the fence of their pasture, were shot repeatedly.
The head of the college's equine medicine department says he doesn't understand why someone would hurt the gentle creatures, which grazed in a pasture near the State Fairgrounds.
"This is a mean act of callousness," said Dr. Malcom Roberts, a professor at the school who performed surgery on the surviving pony, Spindrift.
Officials believe the animals were shot between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. Tuesday.
The college is offering a reward for information about the attack
