Preacher Critically Wounded In Attack During Choir Practice

RED SPRINGS — March 21, 1996 - 10:40 a.m. EST

An evening of prayer and singing turned into horror for the West Side Baptist Church in Red Springs.

The Rev. Eric Rich was in critical condition Thursday after being attacked during choir practice by would-be robbers.

The choir at the Robeson County church watched in horror as robbers chased their pastor and then beat him Wednesday night.

After the Wednesday service, while the choir was practicing, two masked men burst into the sanctuary with a shotgun. Police believe they came for money.

When they left, Rich bleeding on the front steps. Authorities don't believe Rich's attackers got away with any money.

Rich was taken to the hospital with severe head injuries.

Authorities have made no arrests. In the days ahead, church members will be praying for the minister who has led them in prayer many times over the last several years. rick gall, wral tv5 news, robeson county. end eng talent= (renee) --
