Food Stamp Theft Suspected

Posted Updated

LUMBERTON — April 2, 4:46 p.m. ESTFood stamps are supposed to arrive monthly at the homes of recipients, but for several months some people in Robeson County have found their mailboxes bare. And investigators now think they know why.

Authorities suspect that two postal employees -- one in Lumberton and another in Red Springs -- diverted 80-thousand dollars worth of food stamps from their intended destinations.

The probe was launched several months ago after a number of residents reported that their food stamps weren't arriving in the mail. The problem got so bad in Lumberton, the county dropped the postal service for distribution and instead switched to using a Winn-Dixie grocery store
